Marcelo Mayer exits with right wrist discomfort

Roman Anthony talks deadline, struggles

PHILADELPHIA - Just after the Red Sox got some great news in the form of a go-ahead, six-run fifth inning against the Phillies Wednesday night, they were delivered an uncomfortable message.

Immediately following the Sox taking a 6-5 lead, Marcelo Mayer was taken out of the game due to right wrist discomfort.

Mayer has a history of issues related to his right wrist, having succumbed to the issue during the 2022 season. That year, while playing for Single-A Salem, the infielder saw a hand specialist who determined the injury was simply a sprain.

Prior to coming out of the game, Mayer had reached base during the game-changing fifth inning via a two-out walk to load the bases. He would advance to second base when Rob Refsnyder's free pass forced home a run before going to third on Jarren Duran's run-scoring walk. Mayer would ultimately score via Romy Gonzalez's grand slam.

Mayer was replaced at third base by Abraham Toro, who moved over from first base.
