Matthew Slater has a new role with the Patriots

6 Rings Prospect Preview: Offensive and defensive interior lines

Longtime Patriots special teamer and captain Matthew Slater, a staple of the Belichick era in New England, retired from football in late February, marking the end of a legendary, Hall of Fame worthy 11-year career.

He left Foxborough, made some stops on a media tour that included appearances the Green Light podcast with Chris Long and Games with Names with Julian Edelman, and seemed to be content walking away from the game.

But his time away didn't last long. Hardly two months, actually.

After ESPN's Mike Reiss reported on Monday morning that Slater was among those in the building for the start of the Patriots' offseason program, the former special teamer was captured by the team's photographer entering the building alongside wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. They posted the photo to their website.

So what's Slater doing in the building? Jabrill Peppers gave us an answer on Tuesday afternoon at Gillette Stadium:

"It said advisor -- whatever that means," he explained when asked what Slater's new role will be. "As long as I get to bounce some knowledge off of him, see him around the locker room."

"Having Slate in the locker room," he continued. "He uplifts the spirits, always knew what to say. I’m definitely happy we kept him in the building."
