Matthew Stafford, Rams have mutual interest

It's not clear how realistic the fit would be, but Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams apparently have a mutual interest in each other.

Friday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Stafford "considers the Rams a viable contender in his trade market." Fowler added that the feeling goes both ways, as the Rams have "explored possibilities with Stafford."

Last weekend, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was among those to report that the Lions plan to trade Stafford, after he requested as such.

Led by Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, the Rams have a Super Bowl-caliber defense. In addition to the aforementioned defensive prowess, the Rams are coached by Sean McVay, one of the most well-thought-of offensive playcallers in the sport. The feeling has long been that if Stafford, the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, got to play with an elite offensive mind, he could help a team to make a deep postseason run.

Unfortunately for the Rams, while it appears that they plan to have an open competition at quarterback before the 2021 season, it's hard to see a scenario where Jared Goff isn't part of it. For the Rams to trade Goff before June 1, they would have to take on $22.2 million in dead cap money for the 2021 season. That doesn't seem feasible when Over The Cap currently projects that the Rams have -$31.1 million in cap space to play with this offseason.

Additionally, the Jaguars own what would have been the Rams first-round pick in 2021, which they acquired in the trade for Ramsey. Without a first-round pick in 2021 to dangle, it's hard to see the Rams as serious players in the Stafford sweepstakes.

The scariest part for the Rams is that the division-rival San Francisco 49ers appear to be as good of a fit as any in the league for Stafford, who has over 45,000 career passing yards.
