We now are starting to get an idea of how aggressive the Red Sox might be at the trade deadline.
According to the Athletic's Jayson Stark, the Sox are one of the teams showing interest in perhaps the most notable starting pitcher available heading into Saturday's trade deadline.
The 35-year-old Scherzer has shown a willingness to waive his no-trade clause. He is eligible to become a free agent after the 2021 season, riding out the final year of a deal that is paying him just shy of $35 million this season.
Multiple reports state the Nationals preference is to not have Scherzer make another start, with the pitcher having missed his last outing with triceps soreness.
Scherzer is 7-4 with a 2.83 ERA in 18 starts for the Nationals, who head into Tuesday night with a 45-54 record, sitting 8 1/2 games out of first-place in the National League East.
