Red Sox acquire C Carlos Narvaez from Yankees for minor-league RHP, international bonus pool money

The Red Sox made a minor trade with the Yankees Wednesday night, acquiring catcher Carlos Narvaez in exchange for minor-league RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international signing bonus pool money.

Rodriguez-Cruz, 21, combined to go 5-5 with a 2.91 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings in 21 games (20 starts) with Single-A Salem and High-A Greenville in 2024. He was the Carolina League's “Pitcher of the Month” for June, and was named a Low Class-A All-Star by Baseball America.

Originally a fourth-round pick in 2021, Rodriguez-Cruz has a 2.60 ERA in 183 1/3 innings over 48 games (44 starts) in the Red Sox organization.

Narváez, 26, made his MLB debut in 2024, going 3-for-13 with two walks in six games, but he spent most of the season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .254 with 11 home runs, 58 RBI, 56 walks, 54 runs, and 20 doubles in 96 games.

Signed as an international free agent back in 2015, Narvaez spent eight seasons in the Yankees organization, hitting .250 over 496 games. His addition replenishes the depth the Red Sox lost when they dealt top prospect Kyle Teel to the White Sox Wednesday in the Garrett Crochet deal, and Narvaez could open 2025 alongside Connor Wong as Boston's catching tandem.
