While some have suggested the New England Patriots have a logjam at wide receiver, a new report suggests they don’t intend on parting ways with a veteran some see as a bounce back candidate this season.
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Pats have received calls about wide receiver Kendrick Bourne but have told teams interested that he’s not available. Bourne, who had a solid first season with the Pat in 2021, saw his production drop due to a number of reasons in 2022. Instead of the sides parting ways Bourne showed up to camp in terrific shape, adding muscle to his frame, showing a strong connection with QB Mac Jones. His efforts seem to have impressed coach Bill Belichick.
Bourne has been a high-energy player all through camp and the preseason, along with fellow receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and DeVante Parker. A bounce-back season would not surprise anyone from the media to the sidelines, tailgate, and beyond.
Earlier on Tuesday Howe, along with new colleague Dianna Russini, also reported earlier that the Pats are exploring a trade for veteran placekicker Nick Folk. Folk, a steady presence the last three seasons, may have become expendable with the draft selection of Maryland kicker Chad Ryland in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft. Ryland hasn’t exactly nailed the job down performance-wise with some shaky camp practices of late, but his strong leg, age, and upside may well tilt the tables in his favor.
