The Red Sox claimed right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, the team announced.
Tyler has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, Boston has designated infielder Hudson Potts for assignment.
The 25-year-old Tyler made his Major League debut last September with the Angels and pitched pretty well across five relief appearances, posting a 2.92 ERA across 12 1/3 innings. He didn't allow a run in three of his five appearances.
Tyler has both been a starter and a reliever in the minors. In 20 minor-league outings (14 starts) between Double-A and Triple-A last season, he went 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 86 innings.
