Red Sox designate Pablo Reyes for assignment

Mike Napoli joins to talk about managing

In a bit of a surprise, the Red Sox have designated Pablo Reyes for assignment to make room for newly-acquired Garrett Cooper.

Reyes had started the season platooning with Enmanuel Valdez at second base before spending more time filling in at both third and first base. In 21 games, he was hitting just .183 with a .451 OPS.

The 30-year-old had originally been acquired from the Oakland A's last season on May 12 to help fill in at second base and shortstop. Reyes finished 2023 hitting .287 with a .716 OPS in 64 games.

The move keeps Bobby Dalbec on the roster to share time with Cooper at first base while also serving as the primary backup at third base behind Rafael Devers. It would appear as though David Hamilton would also have the inside track at sticking with the team over Valdez when the Red Sox activate Vaughn Grissom this week.
