Tom Brady extension already ‘a possibility’ with Bucs

Though he’s 43 years old and hasn’t been a member of the Buccaneers organization for even a calendar year at this point, it sounds like Tom Brady could be set to ink an extension with Tampa Bay this offseason.

Fresh off his seventh Super Bowl win and fifth Super Bowl MVP award earlier this month in his new home of Raymond James Stadium, Brady could very well be in line to add to the two-year, $50 million deal he signed when he left New England last March.

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show Buccaneers GM Jason Licht acknowledged that a Brady extension might make sense for both sides this offseason.

“It’s a possibility. He certainly didn’t look like he slowed down any this year,” Licht told The Rich Eisen Show as transcribed by MassLive.com. “So that’s a possibility and we’ll have to see how that goes.”

An extension with Brady would not only lock the GOAT QB up with the Bucs for a longer period of time, but could also create tens of millions of dollars of cap room for a Bucs team that would like to retain such key free agents as receiver Chris Godwin, pass rusher Shaq Barrett and linebacker Lavonte David, among others.

Licht wouldn’t say specifically if he’d already talked to Brady about an extension.

“I talk to Tom often,” Licht said. “Probably keep that under wraps for right now, but like I said, I know — it appears that he really had a good time this year winning the Super Bowl and likes our organization, likes our coaches, likes our head coach, ownership, and we certainly love him. So usually when you have those two things going for each other it’s a match made in heaven. So we’d like to keep this going.”

Brady, who has said for years he hoped to play until he is 45, admitted during the run up to the Super Bowl that he might even consider playing past that point. The former Patriots quarterback will turn 44 in August as he prepares for his second season with the Bucs and 22nd NFL campaign.
