Things Not to Do When Driving

I don't know what causes some people to do things while driving...but as I've driven the roads around Orlando, I've noticed quite a few odd things behind the wheel that I feel I need to address.

First of all, let me say, that my safety is at risk when you are doing anything other than focusing on the road. Remember, you're operating a 3,000 pound metal blob that can do serious damage. FOCUS.

Now that we've adressed that, here are some things I've seen people doing while driving.

Don't Read A Book

Yep. You read that right. (Oh wow a pun.) I've seen someone READING A BOOK while driving. Not sure if they've never heard of an audiobook or what...but reading anything while operating a moving vehicle is dangerous and plain stupid.

Don't Put On Makeup

Okay, now this I see quite often. What ever your excuse is as to why you have to put makeup on in the vehicle... DON'T. I have almost been rearended twice by people putting on a full face of makeup. One girl was putting on lipstick and when she looked up, she swerved at the last moment and she had lipstick all the way up her cheek. Part of me hopes it was that really hard to get off lipstick. Wake up sooner or do it when you get to work. There is NO need to play beauty parlor in your moving vehicle.

Don't Shave

This one is just gross! I saw a guy with an electric shaver once SHAVING. First of all, those little hairs are just going all over your car and yourself. Secondly, how dangerous?! How about we don't do that.

Don't Write

First of all, how are you writing when that normally takes two hands? One to hold the paper and the second to actually write. Either way, DON'T! It's dangerous. I get it, someone called and has some important information, but you can simply say, "hey, I'm driving, can you text that to me or shoot me an email?" Or even ask if you can pull over first.

Don't Film Yourself

I see this a lot with younger drivers who want that Tik Tok or Instagram video right away. However, at this point you're not focused on the road. Not to mention, there is now a hands-free law in effect in Florida.

Don't Dance

Now I'm not talking about just moving around to a song... I'm talking seatbelt unbuckled, full on dancing. We saw some of this with the viral "In My Feelings" challenge that went around a year ago. It's dangerous and can cause serious harm or damage.

Basically, if it takes your attention from the road...you shouldn't be doing it. Your focus should be on the road and nothing else when you're operating a vehicle of any kind. Car, RV, boat, bicycle, scooter, unicycle, roller blades, etc. Pay attention and get to your destination safely.
