Just like any TV game show, "Jeopardy!" has a strict set of rules when it comes to answering questions correctly. So, should spelling count if it sounds the same?
During a Final Jeopardy last week, contestants had to identify Motown producer Berry Gordy. Well, a contestant named Betsy wrote "Barry" Gordy, with an "A" instead of an "E." Well, she got it wrong.
Now Betsy had no chance of winning, but fans of the show are still upset. It's because there have been plenty of instances in the show's history where a contestant spelled their answer wrong, but it still counted, because the pronunciation was the same. For example, there was a woman who spelled actor Yul Brenner's name as "Yule" with an "E" at the end. Another contestants spelled Wile E. Coyote's name as "Wiley Coyote."
According to Uproxx, the rules of the game even state that misspelling is okay, as long as the answer is "phonetically correct" and "Barry" and "Berry" clearly are.
But in this case, "Jeopardy!" says they're two different names and thus the contestant added "incorrect information" to her answer.
