I-4 express lanes expected to open by end of February

Barring any unexpected delays, of course.

After seven grueling years of road construction, the payoff of the I-4 Ultimate Project could come by the end of the month. I'm of course talking about the two express lanes running each in direction in the middle of I-4 that are designed to relieve the chronic congestion.

Jack Adkins, DOT’s director of transportation development in Central Florida, said today that, “If everything stays on schedule and we don’t have any blips along the way, we are looking to be open by the end of February.”

The express lanes were the major part of a $2.4 billion construction project of the 21 mile stretch of interstate that runs through Orlando. The lanes will require tolls, however they will not use physical toll booths. You will have to have an electronic pass such as E-Pass and SunPass.

There will be 10 exit ramps and 10 entrance ramps in each direction. To see exactly how the new express lanes will work, check out i4express.com.
