If you didn't know, I play in a band called "Low Standards." We've mostly made our name playing cover songs at bars/venues around the midwest. However, we also write and record our own music. Our sound will likely remind you of my favorite band, Blink-182, or many of the other pop-punk groups of the late 90s/early 2000s.
We spent this past weekend in Scotland, South Dakota (population 659) where there happens to be a professional recording studio. There's also a bar, a gas station, a few houses, and that's about it. It served as the perfect location to lock ourselves in the studio for 4 days without any distractions (except maybe for the aforementioned bar).
Our plan was to record three new original songs that we had been working on for the last couple of years. Due to our geographical differences (two of our members live in Minneapolis, another in North Dakota, one in South Dakota, and then there's me in Florida), our writing process is a pretty slow one. We only get into the studio every couple of years. This past weekend, we were able to grind out all three songs by putting in 12-13 hour days of recording. It's a very tedious process, with each instrument having to record dozens of takes for each part of the song. That's before you even begin to record the vocals.

Once the recording was wrapped up, we were pretty obsessed with what we were hearing. It's crazy to hear what started as a random little guitar riff, or a single lyric, become an actual song. Once our producer finishes mixing and mastering, our plan is to release each of the three songs as "singles." We put all of our music on the major streaming platforms, and usually make a music video to go along with them for YouTube.
Despite the headline outrageously claiming that these would be "guaranteed hits," we know that it will likely not work out that way. As cool as it would be, we just love the process of writing and recording and think it's fun to have these songs that will live on forever. Something we can show our kids and grandkids.
If you are interested in hearing these three new songs, keep an eye out on our Low Standards social pages for updates on the releases of "Enlighten Me," "Get You Back," and "This Seems Like a Good Night." In the meantime, check out one of our recent songs, "Someone Famous."
