If you ever run into Nicholas Cage at a karaoke bar, don't bother asking him to join you for a duet. After a video went viral in 2019 of Nic giving a, um, passionate performance of Prince's "Purple Rain," he says he's done with Karaoke.
During a roundtable discussion with some other actors, Nic said, quote, "Well, yeah, for me, karaoke was like therapy until someone videotaped my punk-rock version of Prince's 'Purple Rain' . . ."It went everywhere and I said, 'I'm not going to karaoke anymore.'"
He added, quote, "Well, singing is therapy, I think. Absolutely. Karaoke's supposed to be private. It's like a prayer."
It's really a shame that he feels that way. Everyone should have the confidence to get up and do karaoke, even if it doesn't sound great. If I closed my eyes while watching the Cage performance, would I think "wow this has got to be an old video of Prince"? Absolutely not, but let's be honest, nobody ever sounds as good as they think they do.
If you missed Nic's Prince impersonation, or just want to see it again because it's awesome, you can see it HERE.
