The Super Bowl Halftime Show has often been criticized for not having much of a "live performance" aspect. This year, however, the show will be performed completely live by The Weeknd. The Canadian artist is the guest entertainment for the game that will be played in Tampa this Sunday, February 7th.
According to Jesse Collins, the producer for the halftime show, everything will be perfomed live. This comes as a surprise considering fears that the show may need to be pre-recorded due to COVID-19. Collins said in an interview "It's all happening in that stadium, in that moment. We're not bouncing off to another stadium and then cutting in, like some people have had to do (before). We are fortunate enough in this situation that we are able to do a live, live show."
Another aspect of the show that may be different is the lack of theatrics you're accustomed to. Collins said "It's gotta be about entertainment from a truthful perspective. Get away from the massive sets, all the hoopla, the flying this and that. And get to the core of what makes an artist special."
It was also reported that The Weeknd even contributed $7 million of his own money in order to "make this halftime show be what he envisioned." We'll find out exactly what it is that he's envisioning this Sunday during the 12-13 minutes that he is expected to be on stage. Hopefully it can live up to the high bar set by J-Lo and Shakira last year!
