Not only did this Texas woman forget to "Be Kind, Rewind" but she failed to return the VHS at all. Now over 20 years later, she's facing felony charges.
In 1999, Caron McBride (now 52 years old) allegedly rented the VHS of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" at a video rental store in Norman, Oklahoma and never returned it. She has now learned that felony charges were filed in March of 2000. How did she finally learn of these charges? She just recently got married and when she went to legally change her last name, she found out that she had an outstanding felony charge for embezzlement.
McBride claims that she has no memory of renting the movie. She said, "I had lived with a young man, he had two kids . . . and I'm thinking he went and got it and didn't take it back or something. I have never watched that show in my entire life. Just not my cup of tea."
Basically, she has no clue where the VHS is at this point. Even if she did, the movie store closed in 2008 and VHS tapes have since been rendered useless by new technology. Thankfully, the county has announced that they plan to drop the charges and not prosecute Caron.
Just because she's avoiding any legal charges, Caron didn't escape without some sort of penalty. She said she's been fired from multiple jobs for no reason "Because when they ran my criminal background check, they're seeing those two words: felony embezzlement."
Overall this is a very unfortunate situation for Caron. I know from experience. I failed to return a "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" DVD in 2014 and the video store closed soon after. I thought I had gotten away with it, only to find out that the late fee had gone to collections, which absolutely throttled my credit score. Whoops!
