The massively popular word game, "Wordle," that has taken the world by storm in recent months, is now owned by the New York Times.
The Times announced the purchase on Monday, which is reported to be in the "low seven figures." Wordle, the game that gives players six guesses to guess a five letter word, is the latest addition to The Times' massive portfolio of word games, like The Crossword, The Mini and Spelling Bee.
"The Times remains focused on becoming the essential subscription for every English-speaking person seeking to understand and engage with the world. New York Times Games are a key part of that strategy," according to the statement. "Wordle will now play a part in that daily experience, giving millions more people around the world another reason to turn to The Times to meet their daily news and life needs."
Josh Wardle, who created Wordle in October of 2021, released a statement saying, "I'd be lying if I said this hasn't been a little overwhelming. After all, I am just one person, and it is important to me that, as Wordle grows, it continues to provide a great experience to everyone."
The New York Times says that the game will remain free for new and existing users, and they are working to ensure that players' win streaks will be preserved when the game moves to its new platform.
