Prior to her passing, MTV News asked her what she'd want her legacy to be and she simply expressed that she wanted to be remembered as a "full-on entertainer and a good person." To pay tribute, one fan wrote, "20 years ago today the world lost an icon. Her timeless voice, songs and style are still as fresh today as they were back then. True icons are never forgotten. I hope younger people will discover Aaliyah’s discography and revel in her pure talent."

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Aaliyah, her revolutionary final album released just a month prior to her unexpected death. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the innovative LP, One In A Million. Industry veteran and music historian, Naima Cochrane, summed up the fans' sentiments flawlessly.
Cochrane wrote, "I think the kids call it a cultural reset; a moment that made the needle scratch and changed the tone for everything that came after. Nearly 25 years ago, One in a Million changed R&B, formally introduced us to the magical musical combo of Timbaland and Missy Elliott [and] elevated Aaliyah from cool, mysterious teen singer to cool, mysterious icon-in-progress. It was one of the all time great marriages of artistry, production, lyrics and visuals in music history. And there's a whole generation that hasn't been able to press play on 'Beats 4 Da Streets,' hear Missy announce 'You've just now entered into the next level,' and let it rock all the way to 'Came to Give Love.'"
