George Clooney shot to fame in the mid-90s at the same time as Matthew Perry on NBC.

Clooney starred on the network’s “ER” while Perry was on “Friends,” with both shows premiering in 1994. Clooney told Deadline about remembering being on the same production lot as Perry at the time.

“We were side by side on the soundstage,” he told the publication. “We were all really close. We were at the upfront in 1994 in New York.”

Clooney recalled Perry saying, when they met before their shared NBC fame, how he wanted to “get on a regular sitcom” and how that would make him “the happiest man on earth.”

“And he probably got one of the best ever. He wasn’t happy. It didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace. And watching that go on on the lot – it was hard to watch because we didn’t know what was going through him,” Clooney said.

“It also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness,” he continued. “You have to be happy with yourself and your life.”

Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54 on Oct. 28.
