Rebel Wilson has come under fire after expressing her opinion about the latest two-week lockdown mandated in Sydney, Australia.
Over the weekend, the Australian “Pitch Perfect” actress explained to her fans why she disagreed with the new lockdown measures that have been inacted due to the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
According to Reuters, Sydney residents may only leave home for essential work, medical care, education or shopping until July 9.
“Sydney WTF !!!,” the 41-year-old star wrote in an Instagram story shared with her 9.9 million followers, according to 7 News in Australia.
“You can’t keep locking down as a strategy,” she added, per the outlet.
Wilson’s statement was not well received as many fans called the star “tone deaf.” Users also took issue for her living in the United States.
One user tweeted, “Given she’s been flying about unimpeded on private jets and managing to keep up an impressive social life, I’m not really surprised Rebel Wilson’s attempt to lecture the collective NSW leadership on lockdowns has backfired so spectacularly. Tone deaf much?”
Another commented: “Not at Rebel Wilson (who now lives in America) judging our Sydney lockdown. Sis, the country you decided to move to has no healthcare and let half a million people die. We’re gonna do what we need to do to save lives, you stay over there.”
Wilson is currently filming her latest film, "Senior Year," in the US and has yet to publicly address the backlash over her comments.
Wilson has been very forthcoming with her fans and has opened up about her health and other personal issues in recent months.
In May, the actress shared an emotional post detailing her difficulties getting pregnant. She posted a photo of herself on a beach, accompanied by a caption that mentioned her fertility struggle.
“I got some bad news today and didn’t have anyone to share it with... but I guess I gotta tell someone,” the caption read. “To all the women out there struggling with fertility, I feel ya. The universe works in mysterious ways and sometimes it all doesn’t make sense... but I hope there’s light about to shine through all the dark clouds.”
This isn’t the first time the star has mentioned pregnancy.
In an Instagram Live session, Wilson also revealed that a primary motivating factor behind her “year of health” was her fertility journey.
