Bill Belichick doesn’t know what a Swiftie is, but he’s increasingly drifting towards becoming one.
If nothing else, Taylor Swift has a fan in the New England Patriots head coach.
The iconic singer-songwriter took over Gillette Stadium this summer as part of her Eras Tour, playing three nights at the Patriots' home in May. Like all her other performances as part of the world tour, he run in Foxboro drew rave reviews – in particular night two, when she played through a deluge.
Belichick usually fancies himself a Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi kind of guy. Springsteen will be in Foxboro over the upcoming weekend, but Belichick is going to miss it with the Pats playing in Tennessee.
But Belichick said on The Greg Hill Show in his first Patriots Monday appearance of the season that he “saw a little bit of Taylor.”
“That was pretty impressive,” Belichick said. “She is tough, man. She just stood out there and played right through (the rain), and then they gave Luke (Combs) a hard time because they pulled the plug on him – that was lightning, I understand that. When there’s lightning in the area we head off the field too, so I can’t really – I think he could blast through a rainstorm, he’s a pretty tough guy.
“When I was with the Giants it was Bruce and Bon Jovi, you’ve got the two jersey guys at the top and probably still are. Always great to see Jon, Bruce in action. They sure bring a lot of energy and get the whole place rocking and dancing in the dark.”
Being asked if he's become a full-fledged Swiftie elicited an on-brand response from the coach.
“Officially? I don’t know about that. I don’t know what officially is,” Belichick said. “What does that mean, like you have a sweatshirt or something?”
A Belichick/Swift crossover on sweatshirts would be a sight to see. Even if that never comes to pass, Swift can rest assured that the Lover era left a profound impact on the future Hall of Fame coach.
“Well look, I’m definitely on the 'you’ve got to calm down.’” Belichick said. “That’s pretty good, like you’ve got to calm down. There’s a lot of times when that’s very appropriate. You’ve got to calm down.”
