It wasn’t a friendship issue that kept Michael Cera out of the group chat, it was technological.
The stars of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” set up a group text chat including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, and more. However, one member was absent.
“I don’t have an iPhone myself,” Michael Cera told PEOPLE. He plays Ken’s friend Allan in the feature. “I have a flip phone.”
Cera did say he was cool with not being a part of the chat as he doesn’t believe Allan would have participated.
“I still think I wouldn’t belong on [the group chat] anyway, because Allan is sort of in his own little world,” Cera said. “Greta [Gerwig]’s gift for me when I arrived was a picture disc of NSYNC’s ‘No Strings Attached,’ which felt like somehow a real guiding light in the backstory of this character.”
Cera told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year it was a “conscious choice” to steer clear of smartphones because he feels like he’d “lose control of my waking life.”
“Barbie” hits theaters July 21.
