A new survey asked people how often they cook dinner at home. Which is different than "eat" dinner at home. Like, if I eat a bowl of cereal or microwave three slices of pizza, does that count as cooking?
We're not sure but, here's how often people are cooking dinner at home:
19% cook every night, and 27% cook five to six nights a week. That's a total of just 46%.
29% of people cook three to four nights a week, 12% cook one or two nights, 7% do it less often than once a week, and 3% never cook at home. (3% also said they "don't know" how often they cook dinner.)
Men are more than twice as likely as women to say they never cook dinner at home. And people ages 18 to 24 are almost three times as likely as any other age group to say they never cook.
Here's what our listeners said about the survey:
Myself and all my friends are all 30 and under and we were never taught to cook. We were taught how to play the recorder and square dance and be in debate club but cooking was never something that we were taught really. Plus then when you go to college you have dining halls. Cooking is never something th at was on anyone's radar to teach us
We use to do carryout/eat out at least 5x a week. With a fam of four the expense adds up! We now cook at home 5-6x a week, whether it is box pizza or steaks.
I cook 5 nites a week, but with FT work and online grad school classes, I ordered dinner last night so I could do class work
My daughter loves to cook. She just turned 14 and has been cooking the last couple of years. She is a big help because if we have something going on in the evening she will have dinner done by the time we get home. She is always looking for new recipes to try. We eat dinner at home pretty much every night so she has learned a lot just from watching me cook.
I'm 26 and I cook 5 nights a week. I'm also married with 2 kids. But I have always loved to cook and I watch food network
I'm 25 and I cook meals at least 5 nights a week for myself and my boyfriend. My parents never did when I was living at home and I felt like I was missing out so it makes me happy to do it now. It's empowering to me and I look forward to doing it when we have a family.
I'm 37, my husband and I have 4 kids (7, 4, 2 and an 8 month old) we both work full time and we cook from scratch every night! I l ove it! Grew up on a farm and my Mom did the same, nothing was store bought so cooking each evening is 'normal' to me - plus that's when my husband and I can talk out the day and share a bottle of wine lol
