At the high-profile event held October 9 in New York City, AJR’s Adam Met received TIME’s ‘Earth Award’ in recognition of individuals influencing the future of the planet through their work on climate justice, awareness, and activism.

While accepting the prestigious honor, Met acknowledged, “I see myself and all of us as just getting started on this project. This is not the end of something. This is just the beginning of something that I hope we will all work together on.”

Through his nonprofit work with Planet Reimagined, Adam, who holds a Ph.D. in human rights and sustainable development from the University of Birmingham, leads the development research and helps to foster change locally and internationally, while engaging the climate leaders of the future using media and entertainment platforms along with strategic advocacy.

Speaking with Met about the inspiration for his work on climate change, Adam admits, "I didn't choose climate, I chose human rights—that was my path into climate."

"My Ph.D. was at this nexus of human rights law and sustainable development," he adds, "looking at large-scale energy projects around the world and how we can integrate a human rights-based approach to the energy transition. Climate has become a passion because it intersects with pretty much everything we do in all parts of our lives."

Met is also a professor at Columbia teaching about climate policy and campaigning, has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and People, and works closely with the US Congress and the White House on bipartisan efforts to promote renewable energy policies in the U.S. Internationally, Adam serves as a celebrity advocate for the United Nations Development Programme, raising awareness about climate issues.
