It’s easy to assume that any bit of music has run through the gauntlet of approvals and other legal mumbo jumbo before hitting the air. Apparently, that isn’t always the case.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was a guest on the latest episode of the Office Ladies podcast and spoke about his initial reaction when the band’s hit single “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” was used during an episode of The Office.

The episode, “Secret Santa,” saw Dwight Schrute and Andy Bernard perform the song during karaoke at a party. Jenna Fischer, who hosts the podcast alongside Angela Kinsey, asked Armstrong whether or not he remembered giving the show permission to use “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.”

The answer was… Unexpected to say the least.

For context, Armstrong said that he binged The Office for the first time back in 2019 so memories from the show are pretty fresh. “I was watching that episode and then all of a sudden the song came on and I was… completely taken by surprise,” Armstrong said.

“I think my face started to get red, and Andy started singing harmonies, which was almost like the… because we do have a musical for American Idiot, and he sang the same exact harmony that’s in the musical. So it was, it was good.”
