Not sure exactly when but, “Baby Shark,” you know, that infuriatingly catchy and relentlessly repetitive children’s song, swam past and has officially dethroned “Despacito” as the most-watched video ever on YouTube.

The toddler tune recorded by South Korean company Pinkfong, was originally uploaded to the video-sharing platform on June 17, 2016, and has since been played 7.05 billion times and counting. Taking a bite out of the competition, "Baby Shark" surpassed the previous record holder, the Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee Latin pop smash, which as of now, trails behind with 7.04 million views.

The catchy children's song we all love to hate had a slow and steady journey to the top, eventually becoming a viral hit and one of the world's most recognized tunes, even breaking the Billboard Top 100 in 2019.

According to BBC News, the simple song about a shark family has proven to be quite the valuable commodity for Pinkfong, reporting the company stands to have made about $5.2 million from YouTube streams alone. In addition, "Baby Shark" has inspired a live concert tour and an upcoming TV show, expected to premiere in 2021. Not bad for a song about sharks.
