New Orleans to close all bars ahead of Mardi Gras next week

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell takes action to prevent people from gathering in crowds during Mardi Gras, ordering bars closed and limiting access to the Vieux Carré.

"Starting next Friday through Mardi Gras day, all bars in the city of New Orleans will be closed, both indoor and outdoor, citywide, including bars operating as restaurants with the AR conditional permits."

She says even package liquor sales will be prohibited in the French Quarter, and alcohol-to-go will be prohibited citywide.

Police will be ready to break crowds that gather in the French Quarter, Marigny, and Treme. Only French Quarter residents, hotel guests, and restaurant and shop patrons will have access to the quarter.

Some visible signs of these restrictions are already going up:

"The Claiborne underpass and corridor will be fenced off, we have to begin that now," said Cantrell, "in order for things to be in place as we move towards and through next weekend."

She said bar workers should go ahead and file for unemployment for those five days.
