The first Monday in May has come and gone, and with it, fashion’s biggest night — the 2024 Met Gala. While this year’s exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again, this year’s theme was “The Garden of Time.”
Getting its name from a J.G. Ballard story about a count who, to keep an angry mob nearing his castle at bay, cuts a rose from his garden to slow down time, until there are no flowers remaining. The night’s sartorial theme, with it’s dystopian undertones grouped with the exhibit’s emphasis on old and new, inspired everything from florals, twigs, and shrubs to techno-inspired fashion, and even a Sleeping Beauty reference or two.
