United Airlines is facing a lawsuit after the plane’s engine caught fire mid-air during a flight in February.

A report from Business Insider confirms that Joseph McGinley and Jonathan Strawn, who were passengers on the flight from Denver to Honolulu, filed two separate lawsuits. Both travelers are represented by Clifford Law and are asking for $50,000 due to emotional, personal, and financial damages.

“The passengers on this flight thought it was going to be their last,” Robert A. Clifford, founder and senior partner at Clifford Law Offices in Chicago, said in a statement.

Clifford Law has posted about this specific case on its website. The statement reads, “Imagine as a passenger looking out the window of a plane and helplessly watching the engine on fire. The terror you experience lasts a lifetime.”

On that February flight, debris from the United Airlines plane fell onto the ground during an emergency landing. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines burst into flames and suffered engine failure.

Officials confirmed that the entire investigation into the engine failure could take longer than a year. However, an initial probe of the incident has yielded some early findings by officials. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a preliminary investigation confirms the damage was “consistent with metal fatigue.”

United spokesperson Leslie Scott said United declined to comment on the lawsuits.

Information on the Clifford Law website also states that the law firm represents the families of 72 passengers who died in a fatal Boeing 737 MAX crash in Ethiopia in 2019.
