The first taste of JT’s new era and forthcoming album, Everything I Thought It Was, “Selfish” serves up some old Justified-Justin vibes with a brand new spin.
Following its live debut to a lucky Memphis crowd, the former boy bander announced the song’s impending release by posting the single’s cover art, and the caption “1.25.” Shot by photographer Charlotte Rutherford, the photo seems to be taken the same day Timberlake’s album trailer was filmed, and sees the singer facing away from the camera and staring at a backdrop of a vivid canyon sunset.
As for the music video, metaphorically speaking, the majority empty set (not to mention the social media cleanse) gives off the vibes that Timberlake intends to start this next era on a clean slate.
As he sings “Cause your lips were made for mine / and my heart would go flatline / if it wasn’t beating for you all the time / So if I get jealous, I can’t help it / I want every bit of you, I guess I’m selfish,” on the rhythmic track, the Bradley Calder directed visual goes back and forth between showing JT doing some music video acting/dancing and glimpses of a a fourth-wall-breaking, behind-the-scenes vulnerable and unsure Justin. Ending the visual with a classic smirk and walking out of frame, JT leaves us hype to see what he has in store.
