Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa has opted out of the Terps' Dec. 30 Music City Bowl matchup with Auburn, ending his career in College Park.

Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Tua, is the Terps’ all-time leader in most passing categories, and is the Big Ten’s all-time passing leader with 11,356 career yards. He had 3,377 of those this year, along with 25 TD and 11 INT, in leading the Terps to a 7-5 record.

Taulia closes his career with 90 total touchdowns passing and rushing, 89 of those in his four years at Maryland after spending his true freshman season in 2019 as a backup to his big brother at Alabama.

The younger Tagovailoa is not as heralded a draft prospect, given a mid-to-late round grade by most outlets, but is opting out to protect whatever draft status he has.

With Tagovailoa out, the Terps will turn to either sophomore Billy Edwards, who had 10 passing attempts in seven games this year, or freshman Cameron Edge, who was 2-for-3 for 18 yards in one game.

As it stands, those two will battle for the starting job next year with MJ Morris, who is transferring in from NC State after making four starts for the Wolfpack this year, and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
