A man accused of breaching security at NBC’s Today show studio was seen leaving an NYPD precinct in handcuffs Thursday afternoon.
Police identified the suspect as Andrew Truelove.
TMZ reports he entered 30 Rockefeller Center from the Today plaza around 9 a.m., asked staff members for Al Roker and made his way through a stairwell into a restricted backstage area near the dressing rooms.
When he could not find Al, law enforcement sources say Truelove approached Craig Melvin, allegedly lunged at him and yelled a racial slur.
NBC confirmed an individual entered an unauthorized vestibule near Studio 1A and approached Craig.
The network says Craig alerted security, the suspect was detained and no one was injured. NBC also says there was no physical altercation and the company is reviewing its security protocols.
Truelove was booked on burglary, menacing and criminal trespass charges classified as hate crimes, along with harassment.
As officers escorted him from the precinct, he asked photographers, “So, you actually heard about what I did?”
Craig and Al returned to the air about 15 minutes after the incident and never mentioned what had happened behind the scenes.
