New DC superhero movie “The Flash” offers a glimpse of what could have been.

“The Flash” spoilers ahead…

In the new movie, Ezra Miller as the titular hero gets moving so fast he enters alternate dimensions. Some of these show different people as big time superheroes.

Including Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel.

Christopher Reeve appears as Superman as well, with Adam West showing up as Batman.

Cage appears as Superman because he nearly had the role in the late ‘90s for a movie that would have been directed by Tim Burton. It would have been the director’s follow-up to “Batman Returns.”

However, “Superman Lives” did not go beyond pre-production, according to PEOPLE.

The script was written by “Clerks” director Kevin Smith and would have found Cage’s Superman doing battle with villains Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and Doomsday.

Cage told Variety earlier this year the movie didn’t happen because Burton’s 1996 movie “Mars Attacks” was a box office flop.

In a conversation with Esquire Middle East, “The Flash” director Andy Muschietti said working with Cage was “absolutely wonderful.” The director also noted he’s a huge comic book fan.

“The Flash” is currently in theaters.
