The app's story starts with Lucie Basch, a former Nestle employee who discovered many of the products produced never made it to the shelves. Looking into the numbers and discovering one third of the food produced is thrown away, which makes for eight percent of greenhouse gases emission. This caused her to quit and do something more productive for the planet.
Lucie Basch moved to Scandinavia and connected with like-minded developers, and launched the app Too Good To Go in 2015. The premise connecting consumers with local fresh food sources from a bakery, restaurant, deli, salad bar ... app users would be hooked up with a surprise grab bag of food that would have been tossed at the end of the day. The Too Good To Go app allows someone to purchase it at a much lower cost. By 2016, the TGTG app became so popular it united into one global team launching in several countries with aspirations to launch in the USA.
The launch of Too Good To Go USA happened in late September of 2020 starting in New York and Boston during the COVID-19 pandemic. The restaurant industry is one of the hardest hit businesses with little government support. Too Good To Go gives consumers cheaper options to purchase fresh food, while restaurants sell their goods. Reducing food waste, saving meals and helping the environment. The Too Good To Go app is a Big Win that is now in 15 countries saving more than 100,000 meals every day. More here! This app would be a great fit with ATX!
