Happy Total Solar Eclipse 2024! Now what can you do with your cool solar safety glasses? Instead of throwing them in a drawer until next time, which looks like that will be another 20 years in August of 2044. Or tossing them in the trash to end up in the landfill with millions more! Donate them!
The city of Austin will donate them to "Astronomers Without Borders". A nonprofit that collects safety eclipse glasses and distributes them to others around the world who don't have the resources to get them. They have been doing this since 2008.
AWB is collecting eclipse glasses for the next eclipse in October. It will take place in the southern part of South America in Chile and Argentina. Areas with many remote communties with schools that do not have access to eclipse glasses.
The city of Austin will have AWB boxes set up for solar glasses donations at recreation centers, senior centers, cultural centers, the Austin Nature and Science Center, Austin Public Library branches and Austin Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center through April 26. The boxes will be located outside of the buildings. Find a location.
