The Heat is ON ... OUTSIDE! The ACs are cranked up inside! Lots of energy
is being used, which means higher bills! Austin Energy has some small changes that can add up to big savings. It's 1Thing we can do together ATX!
Aim for 78 degrees or higher when setting your thermostat this summer for the largest savings. When you are away for two hours or more, set it to 85 degrees. 20 Degree Rule is also supported for saving energy and money.
Point fans in your direction making it feel 4 degrees cooler. Only have fans on when you're in the room.
Close shades and blinds on windows with direct sunlight to stop the heat from coming inside. Seal up drafts! Change air filters monthly.
Provide shade for outside AC units with trees and other ways to have them run more efficiently using 10% less electricity.
Plant trees to shade windows reducing indoor air temps by as much as 20 degrees, which can save up to 40% on cooling costs.
Avoid turning the oven on during the hottest part of the day. Use the microwave to produce less heat.
Unplug devices, chargers and appliances when you're not using them. They use energy plugged in, even when they are off.
Use power strips. Turn them off when you're not using them.
Install LED light bulbs. Energy Star qualified. Turn off unneeded lights in a room and when leaving.
Use a smart thermostat to save energy and money. Austin Energy offers rebates and incentives to renters and homeowners who enroll in the voluntary Power Partner program
