This year during SXSW 2022 ICON is opening the door to their newest 3D-Printed creation 'House Zero" in East ATX. It's part of their ' Exploration Series' partnering with a Texas firm who is known for sustainable designs, Lake|Flato Architects. The hopes are that 'House Zero' becomes a new genre of homes designed to use the opportunities that are created by 3D Printing.
'House Zero' shows what robotic construction can deliver that is important to housing which includes comfort, beauty, sustainability and attainability, especially in Austin. It was printed in less than 2 weeks. Using the 3D-printing method, a home can be built in a much shorter amount of time with way less waste produced.
ICON's 3D-printed wall system replaces the traditional way of building with multiple steps, which saves time, waste and cost. The structure is made with a material called 'Lavacrete' that helps increase energy efficiency and reduces life cycle costs.
House Zero's design goes with how people connect with nature. Curved walls, rounded corners, with doors and windows placed in ways to accentuate the outside landscape. It allows the sunlight to provide natural lighting which cuts down on the need to turn on lights. A more organic feel with sustainable intentions.
Co-founder and CEO Jason Ballard hopes tthat 'Home Zero' helps to push the boundaries of what to expect from housing and help end the housing crisis in Austin. ICON's focus right now is finishing the 100-home project in North Austin making the world's first 3D-printed neighborhood.
Ballard also looks forward to continuing to work with Community First! Village to build homes for the homeless with Mobile Loaves & Fishes.
'House Zero' is open for tours during SXSW March 13 & 14 with badge holders having priority entrance. Sign up for tours Jason Ballard is giving a featured talk during SXSW on March 15.
