Oxford University Press crowned 'THE WORD OF 2023' ... RIZZ! It was started by an influencer Kai Cenat on Twitch. Thanks to Thom Holland, RIZZ blew up on social media!
See how many of the 8 contendor words have you used. I've used #2 Swiftie (many) and #5 heat dome (1Thing directed w/ heat islands)
1 RIZZ - short for Charisma /style, charm, or attractiveness; the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner.
2 Swiftie (noun): Enthusiastic Taylor Swift fan!
3 de-influencing (noun): Discouraging purchases / encouraging waste reduction.
4 beige flag (noun): Indicates a partner or potential partner is boring / lacks originality.
5 heat dome (noun): A persistent high-pressure weather system over a particular geographic area, which traps a mass of hot air below it.
6 prompt (noun): An instruction given to an artificial intelligence program, which dictates or influences the content it generates.
7 parasocial (adjective): Designating a one-sided, unreciprocated sense of intimacy felt by a fan or follower that makes them feel (falsely) like they know the celebrity as a friend.
8 situationship (noun): A romantic or sexual relationship that is not formal / established.
Mix 94.7! Let's have FUN!
I conducted an unofficial survey with some of my family. I text ...
"Curious? How often do you us the word 'RIZZ'?
Over 40s:
My Honey Ted : "What does it mean? I have never seen that word before."
Nici (Honey Ted's sis / niece Kaiti's mama. 2nd grade teacher.):
"I haven't heard of that word lol ... Oh, not one of my students say it ... Kaiti's students do."
Honey Ted's Mama Barb: "Never ... Not my generation"
Becky (My niece / Siyea's mama. Also an ELL Teacher -English Language Learners): "I actually have never heard of RIZZ ... What does it mean? (short for Charisma) ... I'm sure she (Siyea) knows it!"
Under 40s:
My niece Kaiti (late 20s / dance instructor toddlers to teens):
"I don't use it regularly, I use it more ironically. But my students use it sort of often."
Siyea (niece 14 High School Freshman):
"Not very often. Yea it's kinda of a cringy word in my opinion. 'Rizzler' means that you pull a lot of people. Like a lot of people think that you attractive. So I would us it in a sentence like this "Siyea is such a rizzler."
My small family survey has proven 2 main thingies:
1.) That if and how RIZZ is used is definitely determined by age.
2) I also learned I wasn't missing much not knowing about it until now ... RIZZ is cringy ... especially when you add 'ler' to it!
A bonus discovery:
I have something in common with Thom Holland, who is locked up in love (with Zendaya). I too have NO RIZZ being 'locked up in love' with my Honey Ted. This makes me HAPPY!
