I've had the pleasure of living in Austin with my honey Ted going on 16 years. We are transplant locals, which is the case for many in the ATX area. Many times Central Texas status either transplant or born / raised can easily be given away in how you mispronounce places around the area. I still have to think about how to say some places, because they don't look like the way they are said.
Do you say it the 'Central Texas(n) Way' ? Here are a few I hear said wrong often ... (sometimes still by me)
Bexar County: BAIR or BAY-ur. The 'X' is silent
(I have to look twice)
Boerne: BURN-ee ... yep
(I have to think before I say)
Buda: BYOO-duh ... not like the spiritual leader
Burnet: BURN-it! ... no other way.
Elgin: EL-ghin .. not like gin.
Gruene: GREEN .. that's it!
Guadalupe St.: Gwad-uh-LOOP ... NOT Gwaa-duh-loo-pay
(You'll know when you've said it wrong)
Mueller: MiLL-er ... not MEW-ler!
(I have heard MEW-ler said by some locals, which can cause a disagreement.)
