The Hurricane Bianca star holds the title of the first drag queen to headline prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Wembley Stadium. As the RuPaul’s Drag Race season six winner spoke with Audacy’s Deborah Howell, the multifaceted queen and entrepreneur filled us in on her starring role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, ahead of the show’s North American debut.
Excited to bring audiences into “the magic of Jamie land,” Bianca tells us that the musical follows the story of a young boy who aspires to become a drag queen. “The drag is just a small fraction of the story,” notes Del Rio. “It’s basically someone who had a dream, and sadly not everybody in his family or his regular life is on his side. So he eventually finds his tribe of people that support him.”
In her role as Hugo/Loco Chanelle, Del Rio plays Jamie’s “drag mentor.” Bianca shares, “the cast is directly from the U.K. and I’ve had the privilege of working with them on three different occasions. This is my third version of the show that I’ve done.”
Bianca notes that she is looking forward to performing the show for an American audience now, and watching what U.S. audiences react to versus what U.K. audiences reacted to.
In a historic moment for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Del Rio reveals, “I’m the first gay man and drag queen to play a gay man and drag queen…in this particular show.” The role has resonated deeply with Bianca because she says “my journey as Hugo/Loco Chanelle is similar to my life to a certain extent.”
Born, Roy Haylock, the artist explains that the show is “a play with music,” rather than a musical. “It’s more storytelling even though the songs… it’s a lot of catchy tunes that will get stuck in your head,” notes Bianca.
