In a case of art imitating life, actor Elliot Page has announced his character on “The Umbrella Academy” will come out as transgender.

As reported in late 2020, Page himself went public with his own transition.
Announcing the change on a social media post, Page said, in part, "Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life."
And now his character on the supernatural drama, Vanya Hargreeves, will transition to Viktor Hargreeves.
Gamespot reported that the transition will not be a result of one of the show’s supernatural, time-traveling storylines, but instead as "part of Hargreeves’ personal story arc."
Netflix announced the change on a Twitter post featuring Viktor sitting at a diner, with the caption, “Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here.”
While LGBTQ+ representation is a growing pop cultural topic, as Huffpost reported, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) found there were presently only 42 recurring characters across the broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms it monitored.
Page is working on a biography about his transition, titled "Pageboy," which is slated to be released next year.
The third season of “The Umbrella Academy” premieres on Netflix on June 22.
