Just ahead of the 2021 BET Awards, H.E.R. chops it up with our very own Big Tigger to discuss this season of triumph. For recent Oscar winner, it's still a shock to her. However, her mantra is "it's not validation; it's confirmation."

She revealed that her heart was beating so fast when it came time to announce the winner for Best Original Song. "I can't believe I'm being recognized for this particular song for this particular movie at this time. So, all around it was like an amazing thing," she exclaimed.
Though entering into the industry as Gabi Wilson, a young protégé, she admitted that she "never left." It was simply an evolution. "Every opportunity I had to do music, I did. I never arrived until I released my first project in 2016 [...] and that was the beginning of it, of who I become as an artist," she explained.
The 23-year-old feels "blessed" to be able to "do it on the level that [she's] doing it." Funny enough, she admitted she "never prepared for all of this to happen." She remains in a state of constant evolution. As far as her upcoming performance is concerned, the Bay Area songbird stated "it'll be fun, dynamic, and musical." Yet, she reminded hush on the song selection.

With this year being "the Year of the Black Woman," H.E.R. opened up about her relationship to the BET stage. "This stage is for us. We've always been celebrated. BET has always supported me as an artist, a young woman, as a young, Black woman, so this stage has been the beginning of it for me."
She continued, "I'm always thankful and I'm always a champion of BET. This year is extra special because we're celebrating women. We need to give women their flowers. This should be an everyday thing."
H.E.R. is up for two BET Awards (Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award) and takes the stage this Sunday June 27 (on her 24th birthday) at the 2021 BET Awards. The show airs live at 8PM ET, but you can get into H.E.R.'s full interview with Audacy above.
