In 2020, Luke HemmingsCalum HoodAshton Irwin and Michael Clifford packed up and spent time creating in Joshua Tree in hopes of finding inspiration for their new project. "Complete Mess" was one of the first song from the new album to be written, “and stood the test of time after writing dozens more songs to be the first released.”

5SOS members are the only ones who wrote on the new song, while Clifford produced the single.
