(SportsRadio 610) - Former Texans pass rusher Whitney Mercilus is retiring after 10 NFL seasons, he announced Wednesday on Instagram.

Mercilus spent the better part of 10 seasons with the Texans before he was released last year and signed by the Green Bay Packers. He finishes his career as the Texans' second all-time leader in sacks (57) behind J.J. Watt (101). Mercilus had one sack last year with the Packers, finishing his career with 58 sacks total.

Mercilus made over $53.6 million in career earnings over his 10 seasons, most notably the $28.5 million guaranteed in the last contract he signed with Houston in 2019.

The Texans drafted Mercilus out of Illinois with the 26th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. Though he never made a Pro Bowl, Mercilus was named second-team All-Pro in 2016.
