Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans took a moment to address the mutual decision between Houston and the Saints to call off their previously scheduled joint practices this week in New Orleans ahead of Sunday night's preseason finale in the Bayou.
Ryans said Monday that he was the one who requested that the practices be canceled over his concerns that they wouldn't have been productive due to the Texans' current injury situation.
“Where we are as a team, we're a little banged up, so I thought it’s in the best interest of our team and putting our guys first that we shouldn't do the joint practices,” Ryans said. "(I'm) thankful to Dennis (Saints HC Dennis Allen) and the Saints for the opportunity to have the joint practices and with them working with us, being understanding."
Ryans went on to say that he believes his team will benefit from having a normal week of practice at home before heading to New Orleans this weekend.
Ryans comments came after the organizations released a statement on Sunday night to announce the decision to cancel the sessions.
“Our two teams have mutually agreed to cancel the joint practices that were scheduled in New Orleans this week,” the Texans said in a statement. “After our head coaches spoke earlier today, we decided this was in the best interest of both teams as we continue to prepare for the regular season. A revised practice schedule for each team will be communicated once finalized.”
