Actor and filmmaker Sean Penn tweeted out on Monday that he escaped Ukraine on foot amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
Penn was in Ukraine to make a documentary about Russia's invasion, and said he and "two colleagues walked miles to the Polish border after abandoning our car on the side of the road."
"Almost all the cars in this photo carry women & children only, most without any sign of luggage, and a car their only possession of value," Penn tweeted.
There have been at least 280,000 Ukrainians that have entered Poland to protect themselves and their families from the Russian invasion.
Penn received praise from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for attempting to make the documentary that included meeting with the deputy prime minister, journalists and military personnel.
"Sean Penn demonstrates the courage that many others, especially western politicians lack," Zelensky's office said on Facebook. "The director specially came to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country."
