(SportsRadio 610) - The Texans completed their first head coach interview for this hiring cycle with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Head coach interviews this week are conducted virtually, while in-person interviews begin next week.
Johnson, 36, just finished his first season as the Lions' offensive coordinator after two seasons as their tight ends coach and one season as an offensive quality control coach.
He previously worked for the Miami Dolphins from 2012-2018; as an offensive assistant, coaching tight ends, quarterbacks and wide receivers. Johnson spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Boston College (2009-2010) before becoming their tight ends coach in 2011.
The Lions' offense under Johnson this season ranked fifth in DVOA, which measures efficiency, according to Football Outsiders.
In addition to Johnson, the Texans have requested interviews with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach Thomas Browns, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.
The Texans are seeking their third head coach in as many seasons under general manager Nick Caserio after firing David Culley and Lovie Smith in back-to-back seasons. They have gone 7-26-1 in that time.
Houston holds the No. 2 overall pick in the draft - 11 total picks; five in the first three rounds, including two in the first round.
