While NBC still owns broadcasting rights to the ceremony, the network declined to air this year’s awards after controversy over the Hollywood Foreign Press’ diversity efforts. The controversy is also why the event won't have the celebrity presence of previous years, nor will there be a red carpet or audience in attendance.

Instead, the evening focused solely on recognizing excellence in both American and international film as well as television, while highlighting various organizations and charitable efforts.

Nominations included “The Power of the Dog,” “Dune,” “CODA,” “King Richard” “Belfast," “Don't Look Up,” “Licorice Pizza,” “West Side Story,” “Tick, Tick ... Boom!” and “Cyrano.” Actors in the running include Will Smith ("King Richard"), Kristen Stewart ("Spencer"), ”West Side Story" breakthrough Rachel Zegler, Leonardo DiCaprio ("Don't Look Up"), Denzel Washington ("The Tragedy of Macbeth"), Ben Affleck ("The Tender Bar") and Lady Gaga ("House of Gucci").
