During the Sunday conversation, Sheeran said, “I love Olivia Rodrigo. I don’t know if she would like this comparison, but I’ve been saying for years the world needs a new Avril Lavigne.”
The “Bad Habit” singer added, “You know, like a girl who rocks out and writes the song, and she’s 17, and she’s fantastic.”
Both Rodrigo and Lavigne write their own music and reached superstardom in their earlier teens. Avril’s career blew up with the release of her hit track, “Complicated,” off of her debut album, Let Go. And Olivia has not stopped since reaching new heights with ‘Drivers License’ and her debut album, SOUR.
However, after Sheeran’s commentary made it to Twitter fans noted that both female artists are individuals and that the “Sk8er Boi” singer is still releasing music.
Despite fans not loving the comparison, Sheeran is not the first person to point out similarities between the two artists. This has been an ongoing conversation on Twitter.
