The Reel Buzz: 'Game of Thrones' animated series in development at HBO Max: Reports

Winter might be coming again....

Sources with knowledge of the project have told The Hollywood Reporter that meetings with writers are underway to develop a potential series featuring your favorite "Game of Thrones" characters - but in animated form.

The series would be a drama at HBO Max and be similar in tone to the original "Game of Thrones," gearing itself towards adult viewers.

Reps for HBO Max have declined to comment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The animated drama would be an expansion of the world George R.R. Martin has created in his books. Sources say that the development executives at HBO are working closely with Martin to realize the universe expansion.

The development of Martin's world will begin with the "Game of Thrones" prequel in development at HBO, "House of the Dragon." The show, starring Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, and Matt Smith, will begin production next spring.

There are other "Game of Thrones" expansion projects being talked about, such as a live-action take on Martin's series "Tales of Dunk and Egg" for HBO proper.

Previously, HBO has tossed around ideas for a number of "Game of Thrones" prequels that never came to fruition. HBO Max now aims to focus on building out Martin's "Game of Thrones" universe.

Other streaming giants have also taken to expanding on universes, much like at Disney+, where they've created spinoff series for "Star Wars" as well as a a dozen or so Marvel TV series for the streaming giant.
